Meta Sensor vs iPING 2.0

Agreement of the Meta Sensor against the iPING 2.0 reference across ten putting-stroke metrics, from a structured 75-putt sweep test — five metrics each deliberately varied across their operating range in a dedicated 15-putt block. Three putts had Meta capture failures, leaving 72 matched pairs. Two analyses follow: a per-sweep view (each metric assessed within its designed range) and an all-putts view (every metric across all valid putts).

Closing Impact Timing Lie Lean
error = Meta − iPING
Headline: The strongest session yet — nine of ten metrics correlate at R² ≥ 0.92 within their designed sweeps, and the two headline issues from 6/18 are resolved: the timing channels are now essentially perfect (Back Time R² 1.00 at 1.01×, Total Time R² 1.00 at 1.00×, zero timing outliers), and the Lie @ Impact gain error is gone (1.05×, was 1.28×) with the lie offset halved to −0.85°. The remaining calibration item is shaft lean, which now reads a consistent 2–3° low on both channels. Tempo is the only weak channel (R² 0.48) — ratio noise rather than a timing failure, since its component times are near-perfect. Three putts failed Meta capture (device-reported), the first capture losses across the three sessions.

Per-sweep — each metric across its designed range
Primary view. For each metric, statistics are computed on the sweep block where it was deliberately varied across its operating range — the controlled condition the test was built to measure.

For each metric: how much the sensor amplifies the reference (Scaling) and how tightly it tracks (R²), assessed within the sweep where that metric was exercised across its full range. Scaling near 1.00× means matched magnitude; R² near 1 means lockstep tracking.

Analysis 2
All putts — timing-outlier screen came back clean
Each metric computed across all 72 valid putts (not just its sweep block), weighting every putt equally. The same robust timing-outlier criterion used on 6/18 (Total Time or Back Time error beyond median ± 3·MAD) was applied and flagged zero putts this session — every timing error sits within ±0.05 s. The backstroke over-reads that required removing six putts on 6/18 did not recur, so no putts were excluded from this analysis.
Removed (0 of 72): none — all timing errors within ±0.05 s

Methodology and caveats

Two analyses
This report presents the same data two ways. Analysis 1 (per-sweep) assesses each metric on the sweep block where it was deliberately ranged — the controlled condition the test was built for. Analysis 2 (all putts) recomputes every metric across all valid putts, weighting each putt equally. The two mostly agree; they diverge for metrics whose range lived almost entirely in one sweep. Lean @ Impact is the clearest case (R² 0.96 per-sweep vs 0.34 all-putts): outside its sweep the variable barely moved, so the all-putts figure mixes range-tracking with noise around a near-constant value.
Timing-outlier screen (Analysis 2)
The same robust criterion used for the 6/18 session was applied: flag any putt whose Total Time or Back Time error falls beyond median ± 3·MAD of that error distribution. Zero putts were flagged — every Total Time error was within ±0.044 s of the median and every Back Time error within [−0.034, +0.054] s. Analysis 2 therefore uses all 72 valid putts with no removals.
Meta capture failures
Three putts were recorded by iPING but marked FAILED by the Meta sensor with no metric data: putt 26 (Impact Angle sweep) and putts 61–62 (the first two strokes of the Shaft Lean sweep). These are excluded from all statistics and shown flagged in the per-putt appendix. They are the first capture losses across the three sessions and worth tracking as a reliability metric in future tests.
Test design
75 putts in five blocks of 15, one block per Meta file (closingangletest, impactangletest, totaltimetest, lieangletest, shaftleantest). Each block swept one variable across a target range: Closing Angle (0–10°), Impact Angle (−4 to 4°), Total Time (750–1250 ms), Shaft Lie (15–25°), and Shaft Lean (−4 to 4°). All ten metrics were recorded on every putt. Sweep membership comes directly from file membership.
Matching
The iPING file (Putt3_Putts.csv) and the five Meta files were each sorted by timestamp and paired 1:1 in chronological order. All 75 pairs matched within 1.1–5.4 s (Meta consistently logs ~2.5 s after iPING), and the five sweep windows line up exactly between the two systems. No fuzzy matching was needed.
Error convention
Error = Meta − iPING, with iPING 2.0 as reference. Positive bias means Meta reads high.
Statistics
Mean error (bias) = average of errors. 95% limits of agreement = bias ± 1.96·SD (Bland–Altman). Mean absolute error = average of |errors|. Root mean square error = √mean(error²). Mean absolute % error = mean(|error| / |reference|) × 100. Pearson r, scaling factor (regression slope), and R² come from least-squares regression of Meta on iPING.
Verdict tiers
Strong: R² ≥ 0.75. Moderate: R² 0.55–0.75. Weak: R² 0.10–0.55. Failed: R² < 0.10 or near-zero scaling.
Calibration note — progress vs 6/18
Two of the three calibration items from 6/18 are resolved: the Lie @ Impact gain (1.28× → 1.05×) and the backstroke timing compression (0.79× → 1.01×). The lie offset also shrank (−2.0° → −0.85° at setup). The outstanding item is shaft lean: both lean channels now read a consistent 2–3° low (Lean @ Setup −2.1°, Lean @ Impact −2.9°), which a fixed per-channel offset would correct. Tempo remains noisy as a derived ratio even with near-perfect component times.
